English abstract
How can mHealth support self-management and act as a catalyst in health coaching?
Self-management plays a crucial role in cancer trajectories by strengthening patients’ ability to handle symptoms and treatment. The use of mobile health technology (mHealth), including smartphones and smartwatches, has been shown to improve self-management by increasing patients’ sense of control and their ability to monitor their own health.
The combination of mHealth and health coaching has the potential to strengthen patient–provider relationships and promote individual empowerment. Nurses play a central role in the implementation of mHealth; they are responsible for guiding patients in the use of the technology, interpreting data, and integrating these data into care. However, many nurses face barriers, such as low digital competence and uncertainty about their role, which can lead to reduced confidence and motivation to use mHealth.
Despite these challenges, research indicates that mHealth can serve as a boundary object, strengthening the relationship between nurses and patients through shared experiences and dialogue. To improve the use of mHealth, ongoing education, involvement in technology development, and a focus on digital competence are recommended, as these initiatives can enhance nurses’ confidence and support effective integration of mHealth in health coaching. The aim of this article is to explore nurses’ use of mHealth in health coaching and to critically reflect on the potentials and barriers of mHealth.
