Resumé
Introduktion
Resultater
Analysen identificerede fire centrale temaer:
English abstract
From Pain to Holistic Care: Integrating Psychological Aspects into Pain Management for Orthopaedic Surgical Patients with Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Pain
Introduction
The aim of this bachelor project is to investigate how psychological factors can be further incorporated into the pain management planning for orthopaedic patients with chronic pain experiencing acute exacerbations. The project focuses on the relationship between pain, anxiety, and pain catastrophizing, and on the importance of these factors for holistic nursing care.
Method
The project is conducted using a hermeneutic approach and the FIRE model as an innovation framework. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with two orthopaedic patients and one pain specialist, supported by relevant literature. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis and thematic condensation.
Results
The analysis identified four key themes:
1. Psychological factors such as anxiety and pain catastrophizing are not systematically addressed in pain management.
2. Time constraints may limit attention to patients' psychological needs.
3. Psychological distress can intensify pain and reduce quality of life.
4. Trust, therapeutic relationships, and patient involvement promote safety and coping.
Conclusion
The findings highlight a need for a more holistic approach to pain management. Therefore, we developed a prototype called the Psychological Pain Loading Score (PPLS). The tool may help healthcare professionals identify psychological pain burden and support more patient-centred and holistic care and treatment.
