Blandt andet har hun forsket i den moralske stress, der rammer l\u00e6rere, ansatte i \u00e6ldreplejen og politiet. Hun ser en afg\u00f8rende faktor for udviklingen af moralsk stress i den ofte lange og administrativt tunge proces at f\u00e5 bevilliget den hj\u00e6lp til borgeren, som borgeren har behov for, og som den fagprofessionelle kan se, at der er behov for. \u201dI de sektorer, hvor man har et bevillings- eller visitationssystem, er der en tidsfaktor, som g\u00f8r, at moralsk stress kan n\u00e5 at udvikle sig fra en sund og helt forst\u00e5elig menneskelig reaktion p\u00e5 en situation, der ikke er i orden, til at blive noget, som man kan blive n\u00f8dt til at sygemelde sig fra eller at sige op fra\u201d, siger Nana Vaaben og n\u00e6vner s\u00e6rligt gruppen af unge i mistrivsel. Hvorfor t\u00e6nker vi f.eks. ikke, at mistrivsel hos b\u00f8rn og unge er akut?
